MARAC/NEA Spring 2015: Call for Proposals

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference and the New England Archivists invite submissions of session proposals for the Joint Meeting to be held March 19-21, 2015, in Boston, Massachusetts. The deadline for proposals is July 2, 2014.

While the conference theme is “The Revolution Continues,” the Spring 2015 Program Committee invites proposals on all aspects of archives and archival work. Creative and timely presentations from professionals in archives and related fields (public history, libraries, museums, genealogy, information science, and records management) and from graduate students are very welcome.

The committee is especially interested in proposals that:

·         Feature a diverse set of speakers from different institutions and with differing viewpoints
·         Have presenters from both MARAC and NEA
·         Diverge from the standard session format of two or three speakers talking about separate but related topics
·         Identify all session participants
·         Include a full description of the proposed session

Each presentation consists of 20 images displayed for 20 seconds, with comment

Each presentation lasts 6 minutes and 40 seconds
Highest number of presenters possible is 12, fewer if leaving time for questions

Lightning Talks

Like PechaKucha, but without following a set format

Presentations may be from 3 to 10 minutes long
Number of presenters possible depends on the time allotted for each

Open Forum

Topical discussion with chair leading discussion with everyone in attendance

May include discussion leaders to direct breakout conversations

Roundtable Discussion

Three or four participants make very brief remarks then discuss a topic together

Chair announces the topic, and two other people debate

Standard Presentations

Two or three speakers with a chair

Two or three facilitators offer a one hour, hands-on workshop that gives archivists an opportunity to learn one specific skill

Student Panels

Two or three students create a session using one of the formats listed above
Collaboration between MARAC and NEA members is encouraged! To facilitate collaboration, the Spring 2015 Program Committee has created a space for MARAC and NEA members to develop session proposals together at: Use this forum to connect with your colleagues about potential session topics, formats, and presenters. This collaboration space will be accessible through the deadline for proposals on July 2, 2014.

Message from the Distinguished Service Awards Committee: Special Election Announcement

Attention all MARAC Members:
Thanks to everyone who participated in the most recent elections and congratulations to all those candidates who were successful in being elected to new positions in MARAC. However, due to an oversight, there was no election of any members to serve on the Distinguished Service Awards Committee. As a result a special election will be held to elect two members to this committee in June 2014.

The DSA committee is comprised of the immediate Past MARAC Chair, Ed Galloway, MARAC Archivist Lauren Brown, and two members elected by the membership. Elected committee members serve a one-year term and evaluate submissions to award the MARAC Hollinger Metal Edge Distinguished Service Award to a MARAC Member, in recognition of their dedication to MARAC and the archival profession.

If you are interested in this committee and would like to run in the special election, please contact Nominations and Elections Committee Chair, Susan McElrath at Candidates will be reviewed and a slate prepared by May 30. The election will be held from June 2-30, via Survey Monkey balloting.

If you have any questions or comments about this special election, please feel free to contact MARAC Chair John LeGloahec at Thank you to all for your dedication to MARAC.
