Invitation to Complete Survey on Challenges Implementing Reparative Archival Practices

Members of the “Studying the Impacts of Experienced and Perceived Barriers to Engaging in Reparative Archival Work” project team invite archivists at any level of employment and from all types of archival repositories to participate in a brief survey concerning the impacts of perceived and experienced barriers archivists encounter when conducting or thinking about adopting reparative archival practices. This survey is intended for archivists who are both undertaking and not undertaking reparative practices. We are seeking to understand why archivists are or are not undertaking reparative initiatives.

The anticipated time to complete this survey is 10-15 minutes. No personal identifiable information will be collected or shared.

Any questions or concerns may be directed to the survey’s project team leader: Krista Oldham, koldham@tamu.edu

Please follow this link to the survey: https://pennstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7U6VAGdROFXQKXQ

MARAC 2023 Virtual Conference: Call for Poster Presentations

Proposal Submission Dates to Note

February 10, 2023 – Proposals Due

February 20, 2023 – Acceptance Notification

April 10, 2023 – Posters and Permissions Due

April 10 – 25, 2023 – Posters Put on MARAC YouTube Channel

Poster Presentation Overview

How does a virtual poster presentation work?

You’ll design your poster, and then record a voice-over of no more than 5 minutes where you explain it (as you would do in-person at a conference). You will ultimately submit a video file. We will assemble these pre-recorded presentations for broadcast during the virtual conference.

Poster Topics

While we encourage posters that keep to the conference theme of “Keeping Archives Relevant in the Digital Age,” any poster presentation relating to archives is appropriate for committee review.

Proposal Submission Requirements

Please submit your proposal here by February 10, 2023.

MARAC 2023 Virtual Conference: Save the Date!

It’s only mid-January, but MARAC is already thinking of spring. Specifically, we’re thinking about the Spring 2023 Virtual Conference Meeting, April 26 – 28, exploring the theme “Keeping Archives Relevant in the Digital Age.”  Our Programming and Virtual Arrangements Committees are preparing an information-packed three days, and we hope many of you will join us online.

The conference will begin with a plenary talk from Franklin Vagnone and Deborah Ryan, co-authors of The Anarchist’s Guide to Historic House Museums. Five session blocks will spread out over two days, offering attendees opportunities to hear from a variety of colleagues as they discuss enhancing the accessibility of archival collections, reimagining institutional histories and use of legacy collections and innovations for completing all this work under less than ideal situations (think minimal budgets and staffing.) Vendor demonstrations will also be held virtually, as well as MARAC’s business meeting and virtual tours of institutions throughout the MARAC region.

Registration for the meeting will open in March 2023, at which point the conference program will also be available. Registration for this meeting will be $25 for MARAC members and $50 for non-members. And, once again, our Virtual MARAC will be free for students!

Fall 2023 Meeting Call for Proposals

Call for Proposals

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference is holding its fall 2023 conference in Saratoga Springs, NY. With a town motto of “Health, History, and Horses,” Saratoga Springs is the home of invigorating mineral water springs, a world-famous horse racing track, and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The conference will take place on October 19-21, 2023 at the Saratoga Hilton and the Saratoga Springs City Center.

The Program Committee invites proposals related to the theme “Navigating the Turn: Re-Appraising the Archival Career.” Our profession seems to be in a season of change, buffeted by the stresses of the pandemic, a new enthusiasm for unions and labor advocacy, and increasing expansion into preservation and management of born-digital collections. The theme is inspired by the Battle of Saratoga, which was a turning point in the Revolutionary War, and horses battling for position on the famed local racetrack. The curative waters of Saratoga Spa can also represent an opportunity for reflection and renewal.

The Program Committee encourages submissions from newer professionals and members of underrepresented groups. MARAC membership is not required. Presenters may submit more than one proposal, but may present only one session OR poster. Members of the Program Committee are not permitted to present.

Theme ideas to consider:

  • Employment status, labor issues, changing from junior to mid-career to senior
  • How has the archives field changed over time? Widening responsibilities all seem to fit in our line of work. We’re not just archivists anymore.
  • How to refresh – your career, your mental health, your sense of purpose.
  • Turning a collection around, or making a big change.

Proposal Submission
The deadline for proposals is January 31, 2023. If you are looking for co-presenters or a moderator, consider posting to the Collaboration Spreadsheet. Spreadsheet entries are not proposal submissions and will not be considered. Please use the Submission Form to submit proposals.
